Don't use IE, silly!

This site does not display properly in Internet Explorer because IE supports neither standard HTML nor semitransparent images. Instead, it breaks perfectly constructed web pages in bizarre, unpredictable ways. This is possibly one of the most important things you will learn from this site. Do yourself (and the Web) a favor: get a real browser.

Factoids: little things you might not know about campus and the city

If you have lost a library book, you will get charged $100 automatically. Instead of paying the money you can just buy a copy of the book (even used) plus a $25 dollar processing fee. Just go check with the people at the front desk first. —Joseph Stein

Everyone loves Google, but everyone at UC should love Google Scholar, which allows you to specifically search scholarly literature. —Alexandra Cirone

Whereas most dry cleaners in Hyde Park close at 6:30, the Hyde Park Launder-Koin and Dry Cleaners at Harper and 52nd stays open until 9 every night. —Evan Druce

You can get Playboy magazines at Harper Library with permission from the desk attendants. However, you can’t check them out and you have to bring the magazine back within a certain amount of time.

Experimetrix is a site where you can sign up for (more) paid psych experiments.

If your UCID is a little worn out (i.e., doesn’t work all that well in the turnstiles), just take it to the Chicago Card office at the Regenstein Library (right next to the turnstiles) and they’ll replace it for free. —Jeremy Guttman

If you have a problem, or just want to know the phone number for the Student Care Center or the UCPD or something, go to help.uchicago.edu, or call 834-HELP.

You can take the #55 bus all the way to Midway Airport for only $1.75. The trip takes about an hour.

If you plan it well, you can catch the 173 bus back to campus when you are on the North Side. You just have to know where it picks up and at what times, so check the schedule before you leave.

The CTA website has a trip planner that can tell you how to get from one address to the other at a specific time using buses and L trains.

To get to O’Hare airport quickly, use the Omega Shuttle. It runs once an hour to O’Hare from 5:00am to 8:30pm, and costs $25, or $24 with a UCID. It picks up at Rockefeller Chapel, the Quadrangle Club near the Reynolds Club, and the Shoreland. Note that the Omega Shuttle does not take credit cards or checks from banks outside of Chicago. Be sure to have cash in hand!

When planning your transit time, keep in mind that there are 8 pick-ups in Hyde Park, and allow at least 5 minutes for each pickup after yours. —Joan Wolkerstorfer

The Co-op grocery store on 55th has a video store and post office in its basement.

You need to bring a letter sent to your Chicago address as proof of residence in Chicago to be able to get a Hollywood or Blockbuster video card.
